LISTENING ASSESSMENT
To meet this Outcome, you must show that you can identify examples of relevant genres and styles, their main attributes, and some relevant musical concepts, by listening to music excerpts.
Part A consists of eight questions, and requires you to identify examples of the genres above, and explain how you were able to identify them:
Part B consists of seven questions, and requires you to identify examples of the following music concepts, in addition to some concepts taken from the appropriate National 3, National 4 and National 5.

HIGHER STYLES AND GENRES
NEW WAVEBands from the late 1970's and early 1980's who followed on from the Punk genre were described as 'new wave'. Incorporated synths! Bands such as Blondie, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads etc..
INDIEMusic initially made and released independently from a major record label. Became very popular in the 1990's with bands such as Oasis, Blur and Pulp.
WORLD MUSICIncludes genres such as folk music, ethnic music and traditional music. Indian, Chinese Koto, Indonesian Gamelan etc.
20/21ST century CLASSICALThis era was without a dominant style and composers have created highly diverse kinds of music. Orchestral works, chamber music, choral music, songs, operas, concertos, symphonies etc...

JAZZ FUNKThis is a sub-genre of Jazz music. Main features include a strong rhythmic 'groove' and also a move towards using more amplified instruments and synthesisers.
REGGAEJamaica in the 1960's. The bass guitar often plays the dominant role in Reggae. Reggae is noted for its tradition of social criticism and religion in its lyrics, although many Reggae songs discuss lighter subjects. Concepts include - offbeat, staccato chords played by a guitar or piano on the off beat measures.
SOULSoul music developed in the southern states of America and grew popular throughout the 1960's. It reflected what was happening socially in America at that time. Segregation was a still a big problem in the Southern States. Combination of Gospel, Blues and Country Music. Artists included Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding.
R 'n' BGenre of popular African-American music that originated in the 1940s.In the early 1950s it was frequently applied to blues records. Starting in the mid-1950s, after this style of music contributed to the development of rock and roll, the term "R&B" became used to refer to music styles that developed from and incorporated electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. Popular R&B vocalists at the end of the 20th century included Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey
