ADVANCED HIGHER
The programme of music can be performed solo and/or in a group setting and should last a total of 18 minutes. The performance time on either of the two different instruments, or instrument and voice, must be a minimum of six minutes within the overall 18-minute programme. The performance will have 60 marks (60% of the total mark). The same overall mark weighting will apply to each instrument/voice in the programme. (30/30) The question paper will have 40 marks (40% of the total marks). Marks will be awarded for: an understanding of the concept content for the Course the ability to identify and analyse the use of music concepts and styles in complex contexts knowledge and applied use of musical literacy

The following suggested approaches could be used at this level:
composing music in a selected genre for ensemble such as wind band, orchestra, jazz band or chamber group
composing a song for a show — verse, bridge, chorus and modulation with accompaniment
composing a pop/rock song — verse, bridge, chorus and modulation with appropriate instrumental parts
composing a vocal work in a classical style — ternary form, ornamentation
composing a lied — through composed, equal consideration to vocal and accompanying piano part, word painting composing/arranging a vocal/instrumental work in three or four parts for an ensemble
creating music to go with a short film, video game, story or picture — considering changes in tempo, timbre, melody, rhythm and harmony in response to stimuli

twentieth century musical styles — minimalism, impressionism, neo-classical, atonal, serialism
